"What if a company like Hoka said: 'Alright, we admit we've only been paying most of our athletes like $20,000. We're going to fill 5 spots on the men's and women's side of ultra running. We're gonna pay all of them a minimum of $100,000. The tryout is going to be in 12 months.'
How many people are going to pop over from the roads and try to take those contracts? And how many of them take it from what we currently think are great trail and ultra runners?
Because all the ones who are worth $100,000 haven't been incentivized to even go into trail yet. I'm not saying every marathon is going to be great at running ultra-marathons, but some of those people who have shown the talent to be 2:15 on the men's side and 2:35 on the women's side marathoners - that increases the percentage chance or the likelihood of them also being really good at trail and ultra."
